Utilizing the flatbed scanner has allowed an interception of my work with the machine allowing room for glitches, color fragmentation, and bleeds. When working with the scanner, the performative nature is refreshing and rewarding as the process requires rhythmic movements that translate to moving images. This process has evolved into long stop animations such as The Sick, which was created with an archive of collected materials from magazines, photographs of car crashes, and books. This process led to the exploration of manually and technically distorting the images through physical movements and mirrored effects. The culmination of thousands of photos comprised an archive that I could pull from, beginning to take these manipulated stills as stand-alone pieces or images pairing with poems, like my book, Dream Speak. Dream speak is a method I created to explore my dreams. Upon waking, I recall and speak into a Tascam that I later transcribe. I read and sift through these transcriptions to find poetic moments, highlighting them to choose them to become poems paired with the scanned images. I also use the raw audio to pair with videos like in my first crit, creating a monolog achieving a dream-like dissociated state.
